2022 NFL Draft Team Offseason Needs/Breakdown

Reese’s 2022 All-Senior Bowl Team

In 2021, Cody predicted eight of 32 picks in Round 1 of the 2021 NFL Draft. He looks improve even more in 2022. Look for more Mock Drafts in the Dynasty Deluxe section under NFL Draft Index. Let’s first break down the organization that coached the National team at this year’s Reese’s Senior Bowl.

New York Jets

No. 4 – Kayvon Thibodeaux, EDGE – Oregon

Projected as the No. 1 overall pick for the last two seasons, Kayvon Thibodeaux started for Oregon as a 242-pound true freshman. He totaled 9 Sacks, 1 Forced Fumble, and 35 tackles. He missed 2.5 games in 2021 with an ankle injury that has been highly discussed for why his draft stock has dropped. Paired with his “lack” of motor, or showing heart in times that the team wasn’t playing well, scouts say he can disappear instead of taking over at times.

The New York Jets finished No. 26 in Defensive Pressures, No. 26 in Sacks, and No. 27 in Hurries in 2021. Pairing a high-profile rusher like Thibodeaux with Sheldon Rankins, and Quinnen Williams would create a lesser version of the front-seven that Robert Salah had in San Francisco in Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, and DeForest Buckner.

No. 10 – Charles Cross, OT – Mississippi State

After taking Mekhi Becton in Round 1 of 2020 and Alijah Vera-Tucker in Round 1 of 2021, completing the Offensive line in this draft is a MUST for New York. Add in Sir Charles Cross in 2022 and your bookend tackles are locked in for the next 8-10 years to protect the future in Zach Wilson. The Jets have finished No. 24 and No. 29 over the last two seasons in Sacks Allowed.

No. 35 – Zion Johnson, OL – Boston College

Continuing on from the No. 10 overall pick, Zion Johnson would be a slam-dunk here at No. 35. After a dominating performance at the Senior Bowl, playing with the Jets – Zion plugs in at center or guardand completes a long-awaited Offensive Line re-build. FINALLY!

No. 38 – Jalen Pitre, S – Baylor

After the departure of Jamal Adams in a trade before the 2020 season, the Jets have struggled to fill in the Safety position next to Ashtyn Davis. Lamarcus Joyner (Nickel/Safety) and Marcus Maye (Torn Achilles) filled in at times. But neither are on Jalen Pitre‘s level anymore. Impressing at the Senior Bowl is exactly what the Jets wanted to see from the Baylor standout.

No. 69 – Logan Hall, DL – Houston

“Depth on the defensive line, MORE depth on the defensive line, PLEASE” – Robert Salah. He gets his Ronald Blair, rotational upside Inside/Out Rusher in Logan Hall.

No. 109 – Jake Ferguson, TE – Wisconsin

I compared the Wisconsin senior Tight End to Pat Freiermuth on the last Futurecast Podcast. If Jake Ferguson is half of Freiermuth, the Jets will be happy with this Fourth-Round selection. Ferguson has never crested 500 receiving yards, but never fell below 30 receptions in any of his four collegiate seasons. Ryan Griffin and Tyler Kroft gave the Jets a combined 430 yards in 2021. With the return and growth of Kenny Yeboah, I’d love to see Ferguson join him in the tight end room.

No. 115 – Alec Pierce, WR – Cincinnati

Alec Pierce was looked at as a late-second to early-third round pick prior to the Senior Bowl. After two days of mediocre play at best, Pierce left Mobile EARLY. Was he hurt? Nobody knows. Was he mad he struggled? Not sure. Did his agent tell him, that’s enough were happy? I hope not. Pierce played with the Jets coaching staff in Mobile for two days. Maybe, just maybe, they told him to go home, train, and pack his bags for the trip to New York.

Senior Bowl Coaching Recap

Average 2.5 players drafted per team from the Senior Bowl over last 2 seasons.

2021 Miami Dolphins: Pick No. 81 – Hunter Long TE (Coached and Drafted).

2021 Carolina Panthers: Pick No. 166 – Keith Taylor CB (Played Against and Drafted), Pick No. 193 – Deonte Brown G (Coached and Drafted), Pick No. 204 – Shi Smith WR (Coached and Drafted), Pick No. 222 – Thomas Fletcher LS (Coached and Drafted).

2020 Detroit Lions: Pick No. 75 – Jonah Jackson G (Coached and Drafted), Pick No. 121 – Logan Stenberg G (Coached and Drafted).

2020 Cincinnati Bengals: Pick No. 65 – Logan Wilson LB (Played Against and Drafted), Pick No. 107 – Akeem Davis-Gaither LB (Coached and Drafted), Pick No. 180 – Hakeem Adeniji T (Played Against and Drafted).

According to the above Mock Draft, the Jets would be selecting Five players from the 2022 Senior Bowl Roster. They just happened to coach all five players in Mobile. The Jets have a whopping seven selections in the first Four Rounds, the most of all teams in 2022. The Giants, Eagles, and Broncos all trail by one, with six picks each in the first four rounds.
