Superflex Rookie Mock Draft!

PLAYERPROFILER ROOKIE MOCK DRAFT – SUPERFLEX – August 2022 No. 1 – Analysis

Rookie Draft Season for a lot of leagues has come and gone, but I still have several leagues of my own that have not yet drafted.  This is our first look at a superflex rookie mock draft for August 2022.  I will give my analysis for each round and hopefully you can start to see where fantasy players are valuing these rookies.

Round 1: Superflex Rookie Mock Draft

1.01 – Kenneth Walker III – @TheFFPresident

Analysis:

I have seen a handful of analysts out there that have Kenneth Walker as the top overall pick, but in most circles that’s extremely spicy.  Other than him going first, I fully expect the first five picks of most rookie drafts to look this way whether it’s superflex or single QB.  With the injury to Christian Watson, it was interesting to see him drafted at 1.09.  I also expect Isaiah Spiller to be more of an early Round 2 pick in most drafts, but I have seen him go in the late first in a handful of drafts that I’ve participated in.

George Pickens

One of the more interesting picks in this first round to me was our own Cody Carpentier taking George Pickens over the likes of Garrett Wilson and Skyy Moore.  Pickens is looking great in Steelers camp by all accounts, but we have not been seeing him go ahead of Moore much. Pickens certainly never gets drafted ahead of Wilson.  He could continue to climb draft boards if he parlays his strong camp with some buzz-worthy preseason performances.

My own pick at 1.03 came down to Drake London and Treylon Burks.  They are my two top-rated players in this class from the wide receiver position.  Chris Olave was also considered.  I ended up going with London because I feel like he is the safest prospect of this group.  He has also put some good things on tape at training camp so far, and I feel the best about his prospects here.

Round 2: Superflex Rookie Mock Draft

Analysis:

There is a lot to unpack here.  The second round seems to have a lot more variance in regards to who is in consideration than the first round.  We did see our first quarterback go as Kenny Pickett was drafted at 2.06.  This is about the range I would expect to start considering him myself.  This QB class currently looks very underwhelming, and that is evidenced by only one quarterback going in the first 24 picks of a superflex draft.

My Pick

With my own pick at 2.03, I went with Jahan Dotson over Jalen Tolbert and also considered Tyrion Davis-Price and Dameon Pierce at this spot. Pierce somehow slid all the way to Round 3 and Davis-Price slid to 2.12.

My favorite pick of this round was obviously Skyy Moore at 2.01.  That helped @TheFFPresident make up for taking Kenneth Walker over Breece Hall. Can you imagine leaving a Rookie Draft with Hall and Skyy Moore as your top picks? That would be pretty sweet.

Analysis:

A very interesting round especially at the top.  Desmond Ridder going off the board as QB2 in this draft was not much of a surprise, and then Dameon Pierce and Zamir White went back to back. They were the best players on the board at the time according to my rankings.  The first real zig came at 3.04 with the selection of Kyle Phillips.  Phillips has received glowing reviews during training camp and has quickly moved to taking his reps with the first team offense.  A PlayerProfiler favorite, Phillips has great short area quickness.  He’s showing that he can get open out of the slot at will so far during training camp.  There were several more timer expired picks later in the round that helped the likes of Malik Willis and Pierre Strong Jr. fall further than I’ve seen in most superflex drafts.

John Metchie

John Metchie being drafted in this range obviously hurts with his medical diagnosis.  It will be interesting to see where his ADP ends up at over the next several weeks.  My own pick at 3.03 of Zamir White really felt like a no-brainer.

I would have likely taken Dameon Pierce over him if both were on the board. However, getting White at 3.03 feels like pure robbery.  White’s size and speed combo is very tantalizing, and he put some of that on display in the Hall of Fame Game.  He looks to be pretty entrenched as the RB to own behind Josh Jacobs.

Round 4: Superflex Rookie Mock Draft

Analysis:

Round 4 was highlighted by three training camp risers in Isiah Pacheco, Romeo Doubs, and Wan’Dale Robinson.  These picks were made on Friday, August 5th. All three of these guys have consistently climbed draft boards since then. They certainly all look like steals in Round 4 currently.

I personally went with Keontay Ingram as I like taking shots on running backs with a little juice at this point in the draft.  However, it sounds like he may have an uphill battle to make the team, so this pick looks like a possible waste of a pick.  Cody Carpentier went with Matt Corral in the middle of the round. Any quarterback with a path to snaps at some point in Round 4 of a superflex draft seems like a reasonable swing to take.

Several RBs went to close Round 4 out and none of them look to have a direct path to snaps immediately, but I do like taking a chance on these types of players.  I really liked what I saw from Ty Chandler in his preseason debut, in particular.

Round 5: Superflex Rookie Mock Draft

Analysis:

A little bit of a wasted round for a lot of teams with picks expiring, but there are a few interesting selections to discuss.  Calvin Austin is certainly more of a Round 4 selection to me, so getting him in Round 5 is a win for sure.  Getting Sam Howell in a superflex draft in Round 5 also feels like a very nice pick.  Howell doesn’t appear to have a direct path to snaps currently, but after his preseason debut it feels like he might get his shot sooner rather than later.

Abram Smith

I picked Abram Smith, and he feels like another guy that should not have been available at this point in the draft.  As I said earlier, I like taking shots on guys with a chance to earn carries at some point.  I feel like Smith fits that mold in a big way.  He had a very impressive preseason game and feels like he has a legit shot to be their No. 3 running back to start the season.  With the uncertainty of the Kamara situation, and being unsure if Mark Ingram has anything left in the tank, it feels like an even better selection.

Two running back lottery tickets were also selected in this final round in Trestan Ebner and Jashaun Corbin.  These are camp battles to monitor, and if either player wins the backup job their stock is sure to soar.  The New York Giants and Chicago Bears both feel like teams that may be destined to trade for or pick up a discarded running back to fill into that slot behind Saquon Barkley and David Montgomery.  Until then though, I believe both of these guys are worth monitoring in the final round of rookie drafts.

Final Analysis:

When looking at everyone’s final teams from this superflex draft, there are certainly a few that really stand out to me.  @TheFFPresident ended up with a really nice team. Kenneth Walker III, Skyy Moore, Desmond Ridder, Isiah Pacheco, and Calvin Austin III makes for a pretty spectacular rookie draft.

Gerv26 ending up with an Olave and Tolbert start and then following that up with Greg Dulcich, Romeo Doubs, and Trestan Ebner is another team that did some nice things here. @MattyKiwoom ended up with a nice squad as well as he drafted Breece Hall, Brian Robinson, Dameon Pierce, Tyquan Thornton, and Cade Otton.  That three-RB start could really remake a running back room for a fantasy squad.

My Draft

My own draft of Drake London, Jahan Dotson, Zamir White, Keaontay Ingram and Abram Smith is pretty much how I’ve been drafting this year especially from the three spot.  Taking a high-end wide receiver, and then grabbing a guy like Dotson in Round 2 is about as good of a start as I could hope for from that draft slot.  Following that up with three running backs that have a shot to earn carries this year and in the future is how I like to finish things up.  All in all, a really fun draft with a group of guys that obviously know what they’re doing.  Hopefully, this will help you get an idea of where you can grab these players in your own upcoming rookie drafts.
