5 unknown wide receivers rose from obscurity in week 15

Last week’s top scoring fantasy receiver was… Keelan Cole. Who the hell is that? Well, of the five unknown receivers to post big numbers in week 15, Keelan Cole is the most “for real.” Cole was a small school mega-producer, and it’s exciting to watch him fill in seamlessly for Marqise Lee and Allen Hurns based on his advanced stats, metrics, and analytics player profile.

Damiere Byrd, WR, Panthers

There is less reason to be excited about Damiere Byrd. The good news is he has a cool name, great athleticism, and is comparable to PlayerProfiler favorite, Marquise Goodwin. The bad news is Byrd is the smallest receiver the NFL and was not productive at the college level. Don’t be surprised if last week’s two touchdowns are the last touchdowns Byrd ever scores.

Tavarres King, WR, Giants

Then there is Tavarres King. Where has he been all year? His Target Share and Hog Rate, which is targets per snap, are both outside the top-75 NFL wide receivers. But when he was targeted this season, he wasn’t efficient! At age 27, he is what he is… not that good.

Jaydon Mickens, WR, Jaguars

What about 23-year old Jaydon Mickens? Mickens is a fun story, but he’s like slow Damiere Byrd. And Byrd’s quarterback is Cam Newton, Mickens’ quarterback is Blake BortlesKeelan Cole is the receiver to own in Jacksonville.

Jaydon Mickens Advanced Stats & Metrics Profile

Cody Latimer, WR, Broncos

Cody Latimer has flashed athleticism this season. His Air Yards Per Target suggests he is getting downfield and making splash plays. Is he the next Adam Thielen?

Metrics Value Rank
Target Premium +36.2% #3
Air Yards Per Target 5.3 #5
Yards Per Target 9.3 #15
QB Rating When Targeted 99.8 #27

If we zoom out, Latimer was not a big college producer and is trapped on an anemic Denver offense. Do yourself a favor and stay far away from backup skill position players on the Broncos.
